BALLAST WATER SYSTEM MOST INEXPENSIVE ALTERNATIVE
FOR NON-CSR BULKERS

In an effort to seek ways to exploit all the potential competitive advantages of your good fleet of bulk carriers that are de-ballasting by gravity on the side of the vessel to satisfy the IMO BWM Convention.

During that effort and within the context of BWTS retrofit due to Ballast Water Management Convention Requirements, the most inexpensive structural alternative is the double bottom tanks to be connected with the topside tanks through the outboard air/sounding pipes to avoid direct overboard discharge of Ballast, which is not allowed by the recently applied WB Requirements.

This scope of work, commonly, involves appropriate submittal to Class of the following Items:

• Structural analysis to assess the structural capability of the double bottom and lower hopper structure to optimise relevant scantlings;
• Revised renewal thickness plan;
• Updated typical loading manual & loading sequence;
• Updated grain loading manual, if applicable;
• Updated loading and test conditions for loading instrument;
• Examination of improving loading alternatives to optimise further the ship’s loading and DWT capability;
